Winnie Barawa

Director, Washindi Africa

Winnie Barawa is a 28 year youth champion from Kilifi, Kenya. She is the founder and director of Washindi Africa, a youth led organization founded in 2018 that covers coastal counties of Kenya. Its operation are covered in Kilifi County. She works with women and youth in promoting access to sexual and reproductive health and choices, access to information and prevention of gender based violence. Through Washindi Africa, she amplifies the voices of youth and women on policy and decision making increasing their participation in leadership and health system strengthening especially on family planning and choices. She also fosters inclusion of gender balance in access to economic opportunities for women and youth at different levels. Since inception, Winnie has impacted over 5,000 women and youths with her initiatives and activities.

As a registered nurse she has worked as a family planning and reproductive health nurse at both Coast General Hospital and Kilifi County referral hospital, one of the major hospitals of coast region of Kenya. This enabled her meet various service seekers of diverse background hence about to deeply understand their challenges contributing to access to family planning options.

Through Washindi Africa YouTube channel Winnie provides information sessions on Sexual and Gender based violence, SSRH and FP. Weekly she collaborates with Shujaaz Inc., a media company to host Tuesday Facebook live on impact of COVID-19 and its effect to the community access to health services including family planning and sexual reproductive health.
